Amazon is known far and wide as a pioneer in e-commerce; in 2015 it launched the Echo with voice-activated digital assistant Alexa, becoming one of the first to utilize the idea of conversational commerce.
In late 2016, members of the retail industry, including Victoria’s Secret, Sephora, and H&M, launched chatbots via the messaging platform Kik with the goal of enhancing the mobile shopping experience.
Food service is also getting involved in new chatbot technology. In spring of 2016, fast-food giant Taco Bell launched a bot on the enterprise messaging platform Slack. TacoBot’s primary function is to emulate a server; it can answer questions, recommend menu items, and take orders and payment.
